When (not if) your Windoze computer crashes, or if it's shut down improperly, it will run Scandisk. When running Scandisk, it will find fragments of files from the crash, and other trash files. Unless you tell it not to, Scandisk will save those file fragments. The idea is you can reconstruct lost files from these fragments. In fact, it rarely, if ever, works. It saves these files as file000001.chk, file000002.chk etc, and usually stores them in the root of the c:\ drive. They are worthless, and can be VERY large, sucking up a lot of disk space.
