This is guessing but the reason it won't start is you can't get it to neutral. The reason you can't get to neutral is when you put the halves together the detent ball or pin was not recessed into the neutral safety switch. You probably saw the detent ball for all gears but did not see the ball or pin for neutral. Might be possible to put right by screwing the neutral safety switch out and re installing with the shift in neutral. If you have to split it again I would look at the neutral switch first.
