To get a jump on planting use a couple of dark colored bricks, a multi-liter bottle of colored water, or something similar to a Wall-O-Water or Kozy Coat around tomatoes plants, then put a tomato cage around the plant and heat sink and wrap the cage in shrink wrap but ventilate at the top.

If you don't mind the use of chemical products use cross linked polyacrylamides, a water holding product, to help even out watering and moisture available to plants. With moisture always available to the plant the result is less stress and greater yields. I have known of one corn stalk to produce 7 ears of sweet corn, many others 6. It is expensive so don't bother thinking about it for field crops.
A 1 lb. box of CLP will absorb a barrel of water. Similar product used in disposable diapers.
