My Grandsons and I took the standing seam steel roof of of my front porch today. While loading the remains on the truck, I found several sheets the were stamped GUARANTEED UNTIL 1925. We didn't take it off because it was bad, only so we could match the roof slope up with the one next to it. It would have lasted quite a few more years. It did have what seemed to be a coat of aluminum paint on it. When I told an old contractor about it, he said there was one guy in town who used to put those roofs on a long time ago, Steve Mettler. When we were unloading the scrap, found a sheet that was stenciled GEO. METTLER. Figured it might have had a guarantee of 25 years when new which would make it over 100 yrs old. Figure the house is about 150 yrs old it has a couple of 3.5 foot dia oak trees that a former owner said were planted by his grandfather when he came back from the Civil War.
