I'm not sure what this is about, but there is NO law in New York that says you can;t drive or park with your hitch and ball plugged in.
Laws in New York are not secret. They have to be written and recorded in the State laws books. Either administrative or consolidated.
What DID happen is some wack-job council-woman in Brooklyn New York banged her leg into someone's parked truck and hitch. So, she's trying to sue for big dollars.
Councilwoman Letitia James was already told there is NO such law in New York State, New York City, nor in Brooklyn. Last I heard, she had to drop the suit and has been hammered by the local press.
The events of July 11 are now notorious in the legal record: James, according to her court filings, claims that she sustained “serious, severe and permanent [injuries] to her limbs and body” after she walked into a four-inch trailer hitch protruding from David Day’s parked car.
She’s seeking unspecified damages.
But Day (owner of the evil trailer hitch) maintains that James was negligent for walking into his parked car — and New York state law states that it is legal for Day to have a trailer hitch on the back of his 1993 Chevy Astro van.
“There is no prohibition against trailer hitches in New York City,” said Department of Motor Vehicles spokesperson Ken Brown.
The larger irony of James’s suit, of course, is that the councilwoman, not Day, may be the person who broke traffic regulations.
Walking between two parked cars could be jaywalking.
