It’s been a frustrating afternoon. I just finished rebuilding a Wisconsin VH4D in my Skid Steer. I’ve rebuilt one before so it’s not my first time with this particular engine.
Bored it out, new pistons, rings, valves, seats, guides, bearings, bushings, and the whole shebang.
Got it put back in the skid steer this afternoon but cannot get it to fire up. I’ve got compression (about 75lbs on each cylinder right now but the rings probably haven’t seated since it hasn’t run yet). I have a Pertronix ignition in it that was working before the rebuild. I initially had a problem with it but now seem to have a nice hot spark. I have checked, rechecked and re-rechecked the timing and it seems to be spot on. Taken the carb back off (which I also just rebuilt) and cant see anything wrong there either. I even tried a couple shots of ether while cranking with no results. It will occasionally pop but will not start. When examining the plugs only the # 1 cylinder shows any sign of ever firing.
What am I missing here? I’ve got a headache now and cant think anymore!

Today's Featured Article - 12-Volt Conversions for 4-Cylinder Ford 2000 & 4000 Tractors - by Tommy Duvall. After two summers of having to park my old 1964 model 4000 gas 4 cyl. on a hill just in case the 6 volt system, for whatever reason, would not crank her, I decided to try the 12 volt conversion. After some research of convert or not, I decided to go ahead, the main reason being that this tractor was a working tractor, not a show tractor (yet). I did keep everything I replaced for the day I do want to restore her to showroom condition.
