Cat 933 11A shovel dozer

I've had this machine about a year and it's been running good until yesterday. The compression release lever became stuck in the release compression position. So I removed the valve cover and examined the cam that pushes the spring loaded compression release value on and off. Seems like the cam turned too far towards one side and can not return to its normal position. I'm thinking of removing the bolts that hold the valve levers so I can turn the cam around into it's correct position. Is this right or is there a better way to correct this problem. Also, any idea on how the problem happened in the first place. Thanks! Still love the machine.
