Saturday night I attended a birthday get together for a friend, at the party I got a little time ot talk to a employe of the manure pumping crew. The young man who was injured late thursday woke up late saturday. He is on a resparator, but able to communicate through hand signals and nodding. he can move his hands and feet. while It's too soon to tell about lasting effects, it looks like he will, at least mostly, recover.
The heavy metal seat back and quick thinking by the farmer and another employe, who got him out of the cab and got him lying on his side, with the uninjured lung up so he didn't drowned in his own blood are being credited with saving his life.
After the accident, thay pulled and inspected the pump and are at a loss to explain the reason for the accident. They think he wanted to change the direction of the agitation output nozzel, and grabed the wrong hydraulic lever by mistake, actuating the output control valve But this system is protected by a preasure relief system that is supposed to prevent preasure from reaching a point to do this type of damage. The relief system was found to be working. They were unable to find enough of the broken clamp to determin why it failed.
They now park agitating tractors slightly off to the side so that if this were ever to happen again, the pipe would miss the cab. Also they are disconnecting the hydraulic hoses from the tractor that actuate the discharge valve on pumps when used for agitating, to prevent accidentaly changing the valve setting.
He also affirmed the almost unbelavable time line of events That I was told of at the sceene. First the local ambulance crew was called, arrived, treated, and assesed him. They then called in the medevac helicopter. Before the chopper arrived, they called it off and called for the county coronor. Before the medivac chopper returned to the hospital, they called it back, and flew him out. I CAN NOT SAY HOW MUCH TIME ELAPSED BETWEEN THE CHOPPER BEING CALLED OFF AND IT BEING RECALLED. I am still not sure how much of that to beleve. Take on face value.
