As Gordo and Dave says. Vinegar is the simple old time tried & true inexpensive method for painting galvanized metal. I understand the acid in the vinegar etches the galvanize and lets the paint adhere to it.
My Daddy was a painter, and told me that one time when I needed to paint the galvanized skirting I had put on my house. I had cut it out of new corrugated roofing.
I got a pump-up sprayer and sprayed it all down and after it dryed I painted it with latex house paint.
It was still good when I sold the house 10+ years later. None of it ever peeled off.
