I talked at length to a used parts vendor that has no prices on things, and often says "whats it worth to ya?", if you ask how much something costs.
His spin was, although he knows what he payed for it, the values fluxuate from area to area, and he sometimes doesn't know exactly what its worth, HERE. And, at the same time he'd hate to sell something for $10 if the guy is willing to pay $50.

Personally, I often figure that if I gotta ask, I probably can't afford it. But then, I've missed some great bargains that way too.
