The limit for class II electrical systems is 48V in residential/comercial/industrial buildings. Max safe limit for vehicles apparently.
Auto manufactures are under pressure to lighten vehicles & reduce parasite loads for fuel efficiency. Power steering will go electric, faster preheating of catalytic convertors & O2 sensors,faster heated seats, quicker rear window defrosters, outside mirror defrosters. Higher voltage allows more power without extra weight & size of the alternator, wiring & heating elements.
