Increased engine displacement on the WD45 gave it considerably more power. At the same rated RPM (1400) the gasoline 4 cyl 226 cu in the WD 45 put out about 7-8 more HP than the 201 cu in WD in the Nebraska tests. Several improvemnts came along as the WD and WD45 evolved and they weren't always introduced at the beginning of a model year. The transmission improvements noted below and power steering as an option in 1956 were two examples. The transmission (hand clutch) was beefed up on the WD45. Snap coupler became a standard feature at serial #151381 and up. A 230 cu in 6 cyl diesel was added to the WD45 after Allis Chalmers acquired Buda Engine. Smoothest diesel I had ever heard at that time. It pulled 5908 lbs in test G at Nebraska versus 5441 for the WD45 gasser and 4304 for the old WD.
