I have a NH616 disc mower. Last fall the lower of the two gearboxes came apart, the one that drives the cutting heads. I took it to local NH dealer and they fixed it. I asked if it was out of oil and mech. said it was. I always check and fill oil in all my equipment so this was frustrating, figured a seal blew, lost oil then lost gearbox. This happened at the very end of the fall season, got it back and parked it till last week. Hooked it up, changed blades, greased and checked/filled the two gearboxes with oil, wait one day, puddle of oil under repaired gearbox. Got into it today and found the dust cover (looks like half a globe) sticking out of the gearbox and covered with a piece of steel has a hole in it. So there is the oil leak that caused the gearbox to die, but DIDN'T get fixed while at the shop. Went to see them today to find out about the easiest way to get to the dust cover.
I tried to weld it but the cover has worn away its initial thickness and now is about as thick as HD alum foil, no welding.
Mech says all you gotta do is remove two bolts going through gearbox and ending past the second cutter and the steel plate protecting the dust cover comes right off. GREAT I say, I'll have that fixed in way less time it would take to get mower to the shop to have them finish job they started,
Then he says, now those two bolts are holding the entire cutting bar to the machine and they have 3600 ft. lbs of torque on them.
How in the *$LL am I supposed to deal with that much torque? I could cut the bolts in the middle and slide them out each end, but he was very particular about them being replaced with 3600 lbs of torque or the cutter bar will go loose.
How does anybody apply that much torque? that is 6 times as much as the IR impact I just bought will produce.
