If a person sees this situation or can somehow know it's coming, try to talk about it first with the friend or try to get next to him or her at the auction and talk about it. It seems to me that if an auction is coming up with this item going for sale you should be able to know and decide what you are going to do before the bidding starts. And it is a two-way street too, your friend, if really worthy will feel sort of like you do, if not, is this friend worth worrying about? It's nice to be noble, but you don't have to yield-unless you pull something "shady or sly"--then you'll feel guilty and probably screw up the friendship for sure. In this world, communication is so important, and so neglected. Friendship is based on honest communication, if not, it's phoney.
