I guess it partly depends on whether you prefer to better yourself or not.
I had probably 15-20 work for me over the years I was farming. I count them ranging from still-good-friends to great-guy to lazy-SOB to very-surprisingly-talented to crook. Just like everyone else, I guess.
It sure would have helped me to have known more Spanish. Especially as the small towns across the Texas Panhandle & surrounding areas are becoming much more predominantly (in some cases, almost overwhelmingly) Hispanic.
I didn't realize that one guy I had was so good - who didn't speak a word of English - he knew 3 phase electricity frontwards & backwards - could assemble Ford engines in the dark - and was a machinist! Not until he was already about to leave for Colorado to pick apples did I learn he had worked in a Ford factory for 11 years in Mexico. I had just hired him temporarily to drive a tractor as a favor to one of my main guys.
I've seen a LOT of immigrants who really care about their families work their tails off to make a happy living for their families at $6/hr or whatever - while sending half of their income back home to their relatives (often elderly relatives) in Mexico... I have a lot of respect for how hard a lot of them work...
For those in that position, it doesn't leave much time or budget for "classes at the local community college" to learn English...
