Running a small business, I can tell you that we have had more trouble with fraudulant chargebacks on credit cards than bad checks. Bottom line is, there is nothing to be gained by getting mad, and mebbe insulting the poor fellow. He may well be of the old school, and it simply never crossed his mind that someone wouldn't accept his word, or his check. Or, perhaps he is afraid to carry large amounts of cash for fear that he might lose it (I "misplaced" an envelope with $400 once, it wasn't funny). Simply explain it again, and offer to hold the check as deposit. As for the suggestions that somehow cash isn't taxable, it is, but unless you make a significant portion of your income buying and selling tractors the income tax is negligible (you don't pay income tax on the gross, just the net (sale price - cost) unless you have already completely depreciated it). Where they DO git ya (here in Pa, anyway) is they want sales tax too, even from yard sales. If you don't voluntarily report it, and they find out you got trouble, the penalties and interest can easily double the (in our case) 6% it was to start with.

In addition to years and years of scuffing and fading, they had paint splattered on
