Lapping valves?

Did I mess up? I just rebuilt a Continental N62 for my Earthmaster tractor. Had a machine shop grind the crank, install new valve guides, and grind the seats. I didn't hand-lap the valves before I put the thing together. Just got it running tonite, and it doesn't run as smooth as I had expected. Don't have a muffler on it yet, so it's noisy and maybe doesn't have as much back-pressure as it should have, but I'm hoping it's not cause I didn't lap the valves. Any experienced mechanics have an opinion on this? I guess I could have checked the compression on all cylinders in the time it took to get in here and post this, but I didn't think of it till I had already quit work. Anyhow, it's getting on toward 1:00 am, time to get some shut-eye so's I can work tomorry. Thanks
