I am working with a Clayton Mark brand hydrant. It is leaking below ground- I think. I took the head off, thinking the control rod could be pulled up out of the pipe so I could look at the condition of the plunger at the bottom of the rod. Well- I broke the short brass stem at the top of rod. It was 7/16 O.D. with a 3/8-16 threaded hole in the end. With only 1/32 wall thickness, it didn't take much.
Then I tried to pull the control rod up with no luck. I used vise grips clamped to the rod and hammered on the side of the grips. Is it possible that this brand of hydrant does not come apart from the top?
So then I made a new stem and put everything back together. I adjusted it until it shut off and could feel a suction as the water drained from pipe. It still leaks though because the water pump is cycling when I have the feeder line turned on.
Shall I sharpen the shovel, or is there still hope? Thanks to any replies.
