If you don't want to be bothered all you have to do is:
1) Mow your lawn ONLY once a month
2) Let the bushes/trees/flowerbeds go wild
3) quit maintaining the house, so it looks dilapidated
4) Scatter junk equipment all over the yard
5) Drive a rent-a-wreck that looks like there is no way it would EVER run on it's own
6) Board up the front door, and put a padlock on the back screen door
This is a pretty fair asessment of a good friend of mine's place.. and he was telling me it is declared a "abandoned homestead" by the UPS folks, as well as insurance adjusters and his township.. And he likes it as such.. NO ONE stops at the abandoned place, and the property taxes never go up.
