When I was a kid in western Washington, we never paid a whit to feed value of first cutting- just started watching the weather from mid-June on, and cut as soon as we thought we could get it dry enough to bale before the next rain. It was generally conceded that you probably couldn't cut 'til the 4th of July.
Now, with mower-conditioners, tedders and round balers, we start watching in mid-May, and try to sneak it in. Some better hay being put up, but we're still totally dependent on weather.

Today's Featured Article - Restoration Story: Fordson Major - by Anthony West. George bought his Fordson Major from a an implement sale about 18 years ago for £200.00 (UK). There is no known history regarding its origins or what service it had done, but the following work was undertaken alone to bring it up to show standard.
