My nephew years back ask Dad that question when he was cutting hedge. Dad told him 7.5 ft. was a good length.
He couldnt sell em. Every one wanted 8 ft or longer.
I get a good laugh as I watch guys pay more for 8 9 and 10 ft. posts then after they set them they go back with a chain saw and cut 2 to 3 foot off the top.

Neighbor last year had to have 10 ft X 4 in. pipe for his corrall posts. Set them this spring. Looks like fensing for kangaroos. 6-7ft to the top of the posts. Thats 6-10 bucks wasted.
