This barn is on the next farm north of our farm
Several years ago, it was moved some 30 miles from its original location near David City, Nebraska to its present location. It had sat unused for quite a few years. The original shingled roof was shot and the entire structure was badly in need of paint.
Its present owner, my neighbor and longtime friend “Vern” said he had had his eye on it for a number of years until he was in a position to make an offer on it and to pay the moving cost if his offer was accepted. Scrib’s House Moving from David City, well known and busy throughout the local area, did the honors of moving it. It was moved in the dead of winter, when the ground would be frozen solid enough to bear the weight.
Someone tipped off the History Channel, and they filmed the entire move from the time the structure was cut loose from it’s original foundation in zero weather until it was parked just short of it’s present site while a foundation was constructed. A couple of years ago, the History Channel featured the move on one of their programs. I didn’t see anything of the move, (I came home from work one afternoon and there it was) but I was fortunate enough to see the History Channel’s feature. It was interesting that even though temperatures hovered around zero when the move began, at one point an unexpected thaw immobilized the move for several days until the ground froze again.
Beyond a paint job and new steel roof, the building needed surprisingly little repair.

Well, although these tires were in good shape as far as tread was concerned, they looked real sad. All were flat, but new tubes fixed that. In addition to years and years of scuffing and fading, they had paint splattered on
