Right now I've got a recent (past 10 years?) horizontal shaft Briggs torn apart on the bench. I can't believe how cheaply they're built. Sure not like the old ones. This thing doesn't even have any real crank or cam bearings! They're just supported by holes in the cast aluminum cover--not even sleeved! That said, with some TLC you usually can coax a little more life out of them if they're not too far gone. I sure wouldn't put much $$ into it though. You're better off buying older mowers at auctions or yard sales for a few bucks and taking your chances. Often they don't run because of gooped up carbs which are an easy fix. If you're lucky try to find a really old Lawnboy. My 1956 model is still going strong after 54 years although I've worn the wheels off it several times.
