speeking for us old farmers? we are busy folks sometimes there is no time to go get a pin or a washer when you are miles from no where and dont have the right part. bailin wire dose work for most all thing to bad its gone ?.at times 1 day can make the diff in breakin even or lossen you hind end " mostly hind end latly" so most of the time nails do for pins just fine.remmember these where working tractors . :-)
as for the dirt ?bet its not durt?the old lubes where full of all kinds of stuff. when they got over time it settles to the bottom and builds up.clean out as much as you can.then do 50 /50 diesel and you fluid . run it for a while (NOT ALL DAY AND NOT UNDER TO HEAVY OF A LOAD) but put her to work all the same . you want to get the stuff workin around real good . then drain it and do it agian . keep doing this tell you are saticfide. then put your normal lube back in and your good to go.
