I have bats in my belfry too. They get in our upstairs bedrooms and bathrooms. I have yet to figure out how they are getting in. Yes they do crap over everything especially the lamp shades for some reason. They cast strange shadows when the TV is on and they fly figure eights above my head at night.
I have calked every possible place of entry including the places where the plumbing goes through the drywall. The dryer vent is screened to keep them from entering. The only place I can figure they are coming in is the chimney for the furnace and the water heater.
I catch them with a fishing net and they tend to die as I transport them outside in the net with my gloved hand squeezing them tightly. They have claws to grip and hang at the center of their wings and they screech like heck when caught. The cat just watches them and seems to be not interested in catching them. Maybe she is smarter than I figured.
They come out just at dusk and can be seen flying around the tree tops catching insects.
