Probably, one of the most difficult things that we adults are required to do, is to force those older than us, who we have looked up to for guidance in all things, that they must give up some of their activities and freedoms. My former flight instructor and three other elderly men, died because he made one too many trips around the patch. He had safely logged tens of thousands of hours in combat fighters, airliners and spraying.
Another friend, George had related to me events I had missed. In the dirty thirties, when he and his dad would use a two man hand saw to cut down trees, so that the cattle had the leaves to eat. There was noting else. He was a flame-thrower operator, in early April of 1945, during the Okinawa invasion and related sleeping under a tank at night because he was too exhausted to dig a fox-hole. The day before Roosevelt died, he was wounded and his war ended. As a civilian, he became a skilled equipment operator, with a great safety record. Last week this changed: ONE KILLED ONE INJURED IN ACCIDENT NEAR TABLE ROCK One person was killed and another seriously injured in an accident near Table Rock Tuesday afternoon. The accident occurred just after 1:00 p.m., on Highway 65, approximately two-and-a-half miles west of Table Rock. The Pawnee County Sheriff’s Office says a 1986 Chevy Caprice driven by 70-year-old Edwin Boman of Pawnee City collided with a Heston Windrower driven by 86-year-old George Kreifel of Table Rock. Witnesses told authorities that the windrower turned in front of Boman’s car. Kreifel was thrown from the windrower, and the jaws of life were used to extricate Boman from his car. Both were taken by helicopter to a Lincoln Hospital, where Kreifel later died due to his injuries. Boman was listed in serious condition this (Wednesday) morning. Pawnee Fire and Rescue, Table Rock Fire and Rescue, and the Pawnee County Sheriff’s Department responded to the accident.
George J. "Babe" Kreifel, 86, of Table Rock, Neb., passed away on Tuesday, May 25, 2010, in Lincoln. He was born on February 3, 1924 to the late George John and Blanche Beulah (Reeves) Kreifel in Table Rock. He graduated from Table Rock High School in 1942. He served with the U.S. Army Infantry from 1943-1946. He received numerous medals and awards while in the service. After the service, Babe purchased several rock hauling trucks and began his career hauling road material for several years. He then farmed west of Table Rock and started a career with Pawnee County in 1952 for the next 41 years before retiring from Pawnee County in 1993. Babe was a bull dozer operator, heavy equipment and road grader operator for Pawnee County Roads Department. He continued farming full time until 1998. One of his greatest memories was getting the opportunity to go on the Heartland Honor Flight Inaugural First Flight on May 21, 2008 with 105 W.W. II Veterans to see the Memorials in Washington D.C.
