I knew a man who was on the USS HAMMANN DD-412,He told me about being tied up to the YORKTOWN trying to get her underway as she was dead in the water, when a japanese sub fires torpedos at the carrier and at least one hit the HAMMANN and took the bottom off- she went down in under 4 mim, he said he was on the forward gun mount and he kicked his shoes off and stepped in the water. surprisingly just about all the crew got off but the destroyer had armed depth charges on the deck and when the charges reached the depth set on them they blew up and killed a lot of the men in the water. He said that in his mind the jap sub never seen the HAMMANN as the smoke from the YORKTOWN was rolling over on his ship hiding it. This bears out because a lot of accounts don"t mention the HAMMANN. If you look at the pictures of the YORKTOWN burning you can see the bow of the HAMMANN if you look real close. -mike
