History/Evolution of PTO

I am not familiar with Ag products and I am desparately in need of this info.
I am searching for information regarding what is PTO and how does it normally operate.
Also, there has to be an evolution of the PTO from purely mechanical to electromechanical type PTO. So, I wonder where I can get such information.
