While I would agree 100% that if you are strictly restoring this tractor you should stick with the original generator.
However if you are going to use this thing and don`t want the headaches of a generator, give it to someone with a boat for an anchor, throw in the regulator for good luck.
Looking at the rear of the alternator, the left terminal, or #1, the one closest to the battery terminal is a switched hot wire.
The right terminal, or #2 is a constant hot wire.
This would be for an internal regulator type alternator.
Unless you are restoring this, I would go with the alternator, if nobody has a boat, set the generator out for the garbage men to pick up when they come by, about all they are worth!!!!!!
