My BIL's BIL has a pond and would like the bullheads removed. Problem is, he has a lot of bluegills/sunfish/hybrids that he doesn't want killed or caught. My wife and I fished this afternoon using chicken livers on a 1/8 ounce bass jig head. We couldn't get it to the bottom without the bluegills engulfing it. Lots of fun, but not the project. She did catch a nice 24" channel cat. Bluegills are around 9 or 10" and very solid. Bullheads far smaller.
I think the only way to catch the bullheads is with a fish trap--like a minnow trap but bigger. They are illegal here, but in a private pond at the request of the owner I wouldn't be too concerned, as a last resort. Any other ideas? I thought sure chiken livers would be a safe bait. Maybe small, dead bluegills or minnows?
