I usually change my own oil.. but now and then my "antiquated" truck goes into town for one (cause they have a hoist, and grease it, and I peek at everything while they have it hoisted) I buy his oil, but I take in my own filters. I save a lot of cash on the filter, he usually don't have the filter my truck takes, and I have added on a water separator/fuel filter that he usually don't carry.
I guess the difference, in my case, is he is a local guy, I have been doing business with him since he opened about 10 years ago, and all but maybe 2 or 3 of the new tires I have bought have come from him since.
Guess it depends on the relationship you have with your repair shop.. Of course, I'm not the type that's sue the repairman if the filter I bought and handed to him "blew apart" a mile down the road... He didn't make the filter. If the drain plug fell out, that could be a different story though.
