When a storage battery is being charged, it vents free hydrogen gas. It has no smell or color but even a small amount vented into the air can explode and easily blind or even kill you. It needs an ignition source and any spark will do but believe it or not, the majority of people blinded/killed by battery explosions were smoking at the time! So the rules are: 1) Never enclose a battery (not the lead acid types, anyway). The vented hydrogen must be allowed to vent freely into the atmosphere. 2) Never smoke around a battery. 3) Never attempt to charge a frozen or totally discharged battery. 4) If you have to jump a dead battery, never make the last connection at the low battery. Better yet, if space allows, make the last connection of the negative cable at the frame or other good ground, away from the battery.
