For a battery to explode, the hydrogen gas INSIDE the battery must explode. Gas outside the battery will not cause the battery itself to explode. However, ignition of the gas outside the battery can provide a path for the flame to travel thru the vent holes to get inside the battery. If the water level in the battery is kept full, there is little room for the gas to accumulate and, therefore, minimizes the risk for explosion. But it can happen. When jumping, connect the positive leads first. Connect one end of the negative to one battery. Connect the other end of the negative lead to a piece of metal on the engine away from the other battery. When using a charger, connect the leads to the battery before plugging the charger in. keep you head back when doing both.
