Eventually you wont have any customers.What you are doing is giving mechanics a bad name.Also most people,including women,know when they are being overcharged.Ive had women ask me if I thought they got ripped off,like when a transmission costed $2000.00 to be replaced,and then it went out a couple of weeks later.Besides that its not hard for somebody to go to a parts store and ask what their price is on parts,and compare your prices.Or even look them up on the internet,I do that all the time.Actually I look for used parts because besides what you describe,even parts stores are high priced on a lot of stuff,and if they dont have any competition in town,real high priced.New doesnt necessarily mean its good nowdays.I hate to take anything to a shop,but if I do,its because I have to.I hate paying somebody outrageous prices,even though I understand it.Most people dont understand why things are like they are,and they think mechanics are crooks.If you gouge people you are a crook.
Actually I dont trust any mechanics much nowdays.Ive called and asked a question and got the wrong answer a lot of times lately.Actually its not just mechanics,but everything.2 times in the last week I called around to get a price on a weedeater and Wal Mart didnt even answer the phone!Twice!So I went to Sears which was another 50 miles away and bought one and found out it was 5 dollars cheaper than Wal Mart.People are always looking for an excuse not to work.Just like not using a customers parts.If I brought you something to work on,and you even hinted that you didnt want to do it,I would right then take it someplace else.If you dont want to do it,fine,Ill find somebody who will,and never bother you again.
I realize poor folks are beat up real bad in this economy,but you have to work if you can.I dont know what kind of a place doesnt answer the phone,but its got to where the whole crowd of people is about worthless.
Also,delivering to Lowes,had to have bills signed,I about had to chase the manger to get the bills signed.Nobody working there would sign them,I guess they were told not to.Nobody wants any responsibility,but they want a big paycheck,but they dont want to do much for it.This wont last too long I hope.Ive been saying that about 20 years and it gets worse all the time.
It wouldnt surprise me to see this country turn into something like in that movie Idiocracy.Instead of 500 years though,I doubt it will take 5 more years.
So its OK for the parts house to mark up parts but not a installer,,, what folks forget is not all work has the same profit margin,,, for most all repair shops a oil lube job is a lost leader if you try and compete with a QL shop...
I will at times depending on what it is install a customers part,,,, even oil and filters,,, I just double the labor and move on,,, if they can stand it all is well if not then they can move on.... If it gets nasty I refer them back to the parts house for instillation....
Example,,, if i install your air filer I charge labor,,,, If I install my air filter the labor is built into the mark up,,, I see no difference so why a debate
NEVER will I use customer parts on a AC job,,, its done my way are the high way,,, some other jobs apply.... I have tried it and refuse to marry a job that uses low grade poor quality parts...
If you do not believe the mechanic doing the job is not a professional then you need to move on,,, I tell folks all the time I could make more money working for someone else,,, the difference is when I work for someone else is I leave with the same thing I came with,,, working for myself what you see is mine...
