I have been running my aerator for 2 1/2 years straight. 24hr/7days/365 you get the idea. The only time the pump is off is when we loose electricity at the house.
If you are using a sump pump you are probably making a small "fountain". I burnt up pumps, extension cords, etc. doing the same thing. Even tried a well pump for a while.
This setup pumps air down to the bottom of the pond to the diffuser. I paid around $500 for mine with an extra diffuser. It has a Gast continuous duty motor on it. I split my air line so I can aerate both my ponds at once.
Only maintenance in 2.5 years is a $4 air filter.
My pond was very heavy with algae. 2008 I saw minor improvements maybe 25% less algae, 2009 I had about 70% less algae. For 2010 I have 2 spots about 3 foot around.
