It seems the "experts" aren't in agreement whether the extra pipe shot up from the bottom of the well or dropped down from above. And the information I've read indicates that the pipe is drill stem, not casing.
At any rate, it looks like BP has known all along that the relief wells are their best bet, and they're drilling two just to be sure. Everything else is a sideshow to distract the public while they complete the relief wells. The first relief well is a mere five feet away from the original bore, but it has another 150 feet to go before it actually intercepts.
