We'll see more "court in the street" as police resources are spread more thinly, and public outcry against criminals grows.
In our area, a meth-head woman broke into a vacant house during the day- owner discovered the burglary, decided to stay at the house that night. In wee hours of the morning, the woman and her husband showed up again- homeowner opened the garage door, and instead of running, the perps shined lights in his eyes. He opened fire at the lights- killed the guy, wounded the woman. Not only is he not going to be charged, but they are filing charges against the woman for the earlier burglary.
We had a case a few years ago where a guy's remote (uninhabited) farm was being hit repeatedly- he stayed in the house one night, meth-head burglar came, owner fired a "warning shot" that went astray- right through the perp's head. Coroner said he was likely dead before he hit the ground. Jury found owner not guilty, and juror later said (with a straight face), "We believed he was trying to fire a warning shot- and we couldn't send a guy to prison for being a poor shot."
