During the state Ag Teacher's Conference here in Montana we toured the old factory, talked to the owner (they are currently not manufacturing but still rebuild/repair their old machines and other large tractors). The idea is that on really large farms (5,000 acre or larger) the efficiency of fuel and time is measured in acres per hour and gallons per acre. So a very large tractor that can pull insanely large implements can do the work efficiently enough to cover the acreage and still get in a timely crop without having 4 or 5 hired hands driving 4 or 5 tractors. The formula for calculating acreage per hour is traditionally (implement width * MPH)/10. So the 80 ft. cultivator at 8 mph can cover 64 acres an hour, one guy in a 10 hour seat day can cover 640 acres of summer fallow. Since going to no-till these really large machines have seen their day.
