A diesel will pump much more air through it than a spark ignition engine. The reason is that the diesel has no throttle plate to restrict the air entering the engine. A diesel (compression ignition) engine does not have to have fuel mixed evenly with air to ignite. As fuel is sprayed into the hot air in the cylinder it ignites as it leaves the nozzle tip and the flame lasts as long as there is fuel to burn.
A gasoline engine depends on the spark plug to provide a spark to ignite the air/fuel mixture. If the mixture is too lean or too rich it will not ignite. Like the diesel the amount of fuel delivered needs to match what is needed to create the power demand. If the gasoline engine were to operate without a throttle plate to limit the air allowed the mixture at less than full load would be too lean and misfires or no firing would occur.
The throttle plates reduces the atmospheric pressure in the intake manifold so less air is pushed into the cylinder when compared to the diesel.
