It turns out the reason my Cockshutt 540 was backfiring and wouldn't start was because the distributor shaft (Delco 12V #111717)was almost siezed and was pulling the dist out of time. I've pulled apart the distributor and inside the casing there is a bushing in which the shaft turns (supposed to). I suspect that with sitting for a couple of months some moisture has created problems. Morever, according to the parts manual there should be an oiler installed on it, but is missing from mine. There is a plug that I can remove and I could get some oil inside however, the oil would not get to the rotating shaft because there is no hole in the bushing. So I could struggle and try to remove the old bushing and install a new one; but I've cleaned up the old one and it now is very shiny inside. So I'm thinking that I should just drill a hole through the old bushing, re-install the shaft, and rig up a piece of piping to get oil into the shaft. Any suggestions? Thanks
