I've known a few union guys - factory workers, construction workers, government workers, etc. To me it always seemed like they complained more, whined more and were less happy about their jobs than anyone else I ever met. Most of them hated their jobs or at least the working conditions they had to endure. That plus all the back biting and brown nosing. Dunno. Maybe it was the golden handcuffs they were wearing - too many years in to just quit so they had to tough it out for a few more years. To most of them it was beneath them to pick up a broom or grab a shovel. I wouldn't want to be a union worker. I got no benefits, no vacation, sick pay, unemployment, dental or retirement package. No one to blame but me. No one to sweep or dig but me. No one to get my rear end out of a jam but me. Got to save a little in the fat years to cover for the lean years. Can't punch out at 4:30 and forget about work - gotta keep thinking about how to make tomorrow a success. Give my customers my very best - work my hardest, fastest, smartest - every hour of every day. I'm just a scab. A little sole proprietorship. But Lord knows I wouldn't have it any other way.

The year was about 1967 and my father found a good used Ford 601 tractor to use on the farm instead of "Bob", our old mule. Now my grandfather had had this mule since the mid 40's and he was getting some age on him. S
