I just did research to install a filter. From what I found earlier systems generally had "suction strainers" while later systems use "return filters". Suction strainers are installed on the line from the reservoir. These can be in tank or spin-on type and are usually a 100 mesh or 150 micron screen with a 3-5 psi by-pass. Return filters are installed at the last point in the system in the line going into the reservoir and are usually a 10 or 25 micro filter.
