Sorry, considerably south of there. Mostly not gov't employees here in central Va.
But what I wrote about was retail stores scattered over Va, NC, and W Va. Where my wife doesn't work is N. Virginia, traffic's so bad that she can't make any money there. She needs to make more than one sales call per day. Last week she was in NC mountains, had a very good week. And part of what we really enjoy is that she's selling almost all US-produced goods. It's encouraging that so many stores care, and that their customers apparently care.
I'm sure you know that a small retailer needs to do something OTHER than compete with Walmart. Many of her buyers she's been calling on for 20 years. They're doing something right to still be in business.
Two contractors called me last week, looking for lumber. Only one could I supply, unfortunately. Need to mill more white oak. And yes, housing's way off here too, but it sure ain't dead. Any more than it is is northern Ohio.
And as far as my trucking buddy goes, almost never hauling to or from Va. More usual is a load from Lexington, Ky to upstate New York. That sort of hauling. Nothing I want to do, but it's working for him.
That perspective I mentioned is along the lines of the glass half-full or half-empty. I can find plenty of folks around here who'd agree with the doom 'n gloom attitude of many in this thread. But if they looked around, it doesn't have to be that way for them, any more than it is for me. Attitude is important.

But, on the other hand, there is a secret language that our mechanical companions readily do speak. It is an interesting form of communication that involves all the senses of the listener. In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo.
