My family has owned nothing but orange (Allis Chalmers) and green (John Deere) except for maybe a random one-off utility tractor or something (Ford or New Holland, typically). I have nothing against the green machine, they drive great and usually don't give too much of a fuss (well, except for a brand new 8530 that had a fuel pump go out within 200 engine hours, and the damn thing didn't even have a manual release for the electronic parking brake so that we could tow it off the road from where it died).
But my typical gripe is that they seem to be a tad bit overpriced. Throw on that green paint and the price goes up 20 to 30%. That, and I don't like Sloan Implement, one of our closest Deere dealers... Due to their crappy attitudes and smugness, coupled with their ignorance of all things farming. I've never heard salespeople insult customers so damn bad in my life, and in the next breath not be able to find parts on their plainly labeled shelves for a tractor or planter.
And that... Just kind of sours me on John Deere in general (even though it's the dealerships fault, I take my business to other tractor companies like AGCO or Case IH, just on a matter of principle). Also, was highly unimpressed with several John Deere factory tours. And I guess I can't blame John Deere for advertising and marketing well, but I wear a John Deere hat because I drive tractors. I'm pretty sure those smartasses I went to college with from Chicago who wore "Deere Geare" (as we called it) would know a farm tractor from a Semi.
Also, this is an aside, I go to a Deere dealership and they have hats for like $20. I go to a Case IH dealer and pick one up for $8. Nice thick denim, too. A lot of people around here are all about "green loyalty", but not me. I'll drive whatever tractor is handy, provided it works. But I do have a soft spot for my old Allis Chalmers WD, and our local Case IH and AGCO dealers have treated me right.

Today's Featured Article - Restoration Story: Fordson Major - by Anthony West. George bought his Fordson Major from a an implement sale about 18 years ago for £200.00 (UK). There is no known history regarding its origins or what service it had done, but the following work was undertaken alone to bring it up to show standard. From the engine number, it was found that this Major was produced late 1946. It was almost complete but had various parts that would definitely need replacing.
