You are describing a failing magneto coil. When it gets hot it quits, or works intermittent. Replace the magneto coil,(and may as well change the points and condenser as long as you"re in there). If you have a coil type ignition, your coil may be failing. Parts for WICO and Fairbanks-Morse magnetos are available through this,(YT) website, and lots of other sources
