Not for many years. Grew up on a dairy farm, knew I didn't want to do that. Did try to get into wheat farming with a college buddy, but we never could find any land to buy or lease. So went to work for Production Credit Assn. in 1974, while farming part-time. That was about when the transition out of true "small" farms and the consolidation into larger farms began, primarily fueled by increasing land prices. That all came crashing down in early '80's, and many who were over-leveraged lost everything.
And about that time, as to my part time farming (30 head of cattle, putting up 100 tons hay, etc.), I began to feel like the tom cat making love to the skunk: "I think I've enjoyed about as much of this as I can stand." Wife still has horses, which gives me about as much farming as I want, but plenty of time for grandkids and hobbies.
