Depending on where you're at Furnace oil and diesel fuel are two very distinct products. I can't help but wonder if anyone else here has actually bought and used the two or knows the difference...
'Here' furnace oil will be about 5000 ppm sulfur and will have no cetane improvers. Diesle will be 15 ppm sulfur and have an additive package to improve cetane (ignition quality) and lubricicity. I've used both and a good engine will start a LOT harder on furnace oil because it's harder to get it lit on fire... and it will smoke white until it gets warmed up. A poor engine may not run at all. Once they get hot, and provided you keep a hot thermostat in them to keep them hot, they run and pull fine on furnace oil... so I don't beleive you will have any engine trouble with using it... other than you may never get the engine running.
