As a former Navy carrier pilot I am an expert on jet fuel and it's smell and characteristics. I figure I burned at least 3 million gals of JP-5 in my career and DUMPED about 10% of that to get to landing weight in land operations, Can you imagine opening the dump valves at altitude and spewing out 500 gallons of fuel in a few minutes? To put on a show for the landlubbers, we would open the dumps, then go to full afterburner, which would ignite the fuel vapor trail and you would look like a comet! The government price of the fuel at that time (1970) was ten cents per gallon! That said there are various grades of military jet fuel. The Air Farce uses a higher volatile fuel not deemed safe for shipboard storage. It's lighter and has a lower flashpoint. BUT you don't get the same mileage. Can be critical on a long distane flight. When I was flying out of a test center they had thousands of gallons of fuel taken out of aircraft for samples and testing. I never left the base with less than 20 gallons of fuel that was going to be burned off.
