yup, it's tough to lose man's best friend. I remember seeing a b/w short movie from the 40's on TV once that showed a farmer walking along a country road with his dog, reminiscing with a crack in his voice about the good times he had with the dog. After a while, he comes to a spot, the dog lies down and looks up at him and then the scene changes to the farmhouse kitchen where the wife is cooking and looks up when she hears the shotgun go off.
Then she looks out the door to see the dog followed by the farmer who says "I missed". She rolls her eyes and chuckles. A great piece.
