Starting at the clutch plate there are splines that drive a tubular shaft. This is driven all the time, and is not affected by the clutch. This shaft drives a set of gears which in turn drive a shaft to the rear of the tractor. This may go through a seasonal disconnect on some tractors, allowing the PTO to be disconnected. At the rear is a PTO unit. In it is a planetary gear set with the ratios designed to make 540 RPM at full load speed. This set of gears has two friction bands around it. One rides on the outside of the gear housing and is a PTO brake. The other is connected to the gear set and when applied locks that component causing the PTO to drive attachments. The two bands are loose when the lever is in the middle of its travel, but each is locked when the lever is locked (ON, or OFF) in the latches at the limit of travel. All looseness must be taken out of the lever and linkage for accurate and usable adjustment. See archives for Adjustment procedure, under Janicholson PTO adjust. Jim
